Protecting Senior Health in the Hot Summer
— Prevention of Heatstroke and Dehydration with Korean Medicine

When temperatures rise above 30°C in the hot summer months, the season becomes a burden for everyone, but especially life-threatening for the elderly. Older adults often experience reduced ability to regulate body temperature and sense thirst, making them more vulnerable to exhaustion and, in severe cases, dehydration or heatstroke. This risk is even greater for those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease.

Dehydration occurs when the body lacks fluids and electrolytes. Symptoms may include dry mouth, decreased urination, headache, loss of appetite, and dizziness. Heatstroke is a more dangerous condition in which body temperature rises above 40°C, the skin becomes hot and dry, and consciousness may be impaired. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening.

Preventing such conditions requires careful daily management.

  • Drink sufficient fluids before feeling thirsty. In addition to water, herbal teas such as barley tea, goji berry tea, and corn silk tea can help hydrate and calm the body.

  • Maintain a cool indoor environment using fans, curtains, and proper ventilation. Wearing light clothing and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours are also helpful.

  • For elderly individuals living alone or those with chronic illnesses, continuous care and attention from family and neighbors are essential.

In Korean medicine, summer heat is referred to as “Seo (暑)”, which is believed to damage the body’s qi and fluids, leading to fatigue, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Therefore, treatments that clear heat, replenish qi, and generate body fluids are emphasized for summer health management.

Representative herbal prescriptions include:

  • Saengmaeksan (生脈散): A combination of ginseng, ophiopogon root, and schisandra berry that replenishes energy and fluids. Suitable for elderly patients with low vitality and excessive sweating.

  • Jukyeopseokgotang (竹葉石膏湯): Used for high fever, thirst, and poor appetite, this formula helps relieve internal heat and fluid depletion caused by summer heat.

  • Cheongseoikgitang (淸暑益氣湯): A well-known summer prescription for elderly patients who suffer from fatigue and weakened digestion due to heat.

  • Hwangryeonhaedok-tang (黃連解毒湯): Recommended for individuals with excess body heat, dry mouth, and facial flushing.

Additionally, seasonal foods such as watermelon, cucumber, oriental melon, red beans, and water parsley can lower body temperature and replenish fluids. Acupuncture points such as Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36), Taiyuan (LU9), and Neiguan (PC6) are often used to promote qi and blood circulation and support autonomic nervous system balance.

Although summer is a season of abundant energy, it can be physically draining for the elderly. Rather than enduring the heat, combining lifestyle management with Korean medical care is the key to a safe and healthy summer.

At Miso Dream Korean Medicine Clinic, we provide a specialized summer health program for seniors, offering personalized herbal medicine and acupuncture treatments tailored to individual constitutions and symptoms—helping our elderly patients enjoy a safe and energetic summer.
