The Seasonal Transition – A Crucial Time for Seniors
Traditional Korean Medicine Tips for Preventive Health

The transition from summer to autumn brings not only changes in nature but also significant shifts in the human body. For older adults, this seasonal change can often become a “critical period” for health. The weather, with its cool mornings and evenings yet lingering midday heat, places stress on seniors whose ability to regulate body temperature is reduced. At the same time, weakened immunity makes them more vulnerable to various illnesses.

In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), natural rhythms and the human body are closely interconnected. Autumn corresponds to the element of “metal” in the Five Elements theory, which is associated with the lungs and large intestine. During this time, respiratory conditions, digestive issues, and skin dryness are more common, especially among the elderly. In addition, cooler winds and temperature fluctuations can aggravate joint pain, blood pressure instability, and even heart-related risks, all of which require caution.

Protecting Against Temperature Changes
The first line of defense is managing the body against fluctuating temperatures. Seniors have reduced capacity to maintain body heat, so dressing in light outerwear during chilly mornings and evenings, as well as keeping indoor temperatures comfortable, is important. Ventilating rooms is recommended, but it is best to avoid direct exposure to cold drafts.

Strengthening Immunity
During seasonal transitions, fatigue and lowered immunity increase susceptibility to colds, shingles, and bronchitis. In TKM, this weakened state is described as Qi deficiency (氣虛). Herbal tonics containing Astragalus (Huangqi), Ginseng (Renshen), and Atractylodes (Baizhu) are often prescribed to boost energy. Properly tailored to the individual’s constitution, these remedies—whether in decoction or pill form—help the body adapt more smoothly to seasonal change.

Supporting Digestive Health
Digestive well-being should not be overlooked. After summer, when many seniors experience reduced appetite, autumn often brings renewed hunger. However, a sudden increase in food intake can strain the stomach. Eating warm, light, and low-fat meals is recommended. Herbal ingredients such as Agastache (Huoxiang), Aged Tangerine Peel (Chenpi), and Pinellia (Banxia) are often used in TKM to support healthy digestion.

Managing Joint Pain
Joint and back pain often worsen during this season, as cold morning air can intensify discomfort. Warm compresses, gentle stretching, and in TKM, therapies such as moxibustion, acupuncture with herbal extracts, and warming herbal prescriptions can help relieve symptoms by dispelling cold and improving circulation.

Caring for Emotional Well-being
Mental health is also essential. As daylight shortens and summer ends, many seniors experience “autumn blues” or lethargy. Social interaction, light outdoor walks, and hobbies can lift the spirit. In TKM, this condition is seen as Qi stagnation (氣鬱). Herbs such as Cyperus (Xiangfu) and White Peony Root (Baishao) are used to promote the smooth flow of Qi and improve emotional balance.

The seasonal transition is an inevitable part of nature, but how we respond to it is within our control. For seniors especially, preparing in advance and caring for both body and mind is the first step in preventing illness. Embracing the wisdom of Traditional Korean Medicine in daily life can help ensure a healthier, more vibrant autumn.
