Vancouver’s Autumn: How to Overcome the Blues Under Cloudy Skies

Autumn in Vancouver is famously long and gray. Clear skies are rare, and the frequent rain and overcast weather often leave people feeling heavy in spirit and sluggish in body. Many find it harder to get out of bed in the morning, lose motivation for everyday tasks, and crave sweet foods more than usual. While it might seem like “just a mood,” these changes are in fact natural responses to the seasonal shift.

With fewer opportunities to soak up sunlight, the body produces less serotonin—the hormone that lifts mood—while increasing melatonin, the hormone that induces sleep. This imbalance can bring on lethargy, low energy, and even mild depression. Reduced physical activity further compounds the sense of fatigue.

The good news is that you don’t have to endure this season in a state of gloom. Small lifestyle changes can help restore energy and brighten your outlook.

Embrace Sunlight and Movement

Even though sunny days are rare, make it a habit to step outside whenever the sun does appear. Just 20 minutes of morning sunlight can reset your body’s natural rhythm and lighten your mood noticeably. On rainy days, gentle indoor exercises such as stretching or light calisthenics are enough to activate the brain’s “happy hormones” and reduce feelings of sadness.

Nourishing Foods for Energy and Balance

When skies are gray, sugary foods may seem tempting, but they often leave you feeling more drained afterward. Instead, enjoy seasonal autumn fruits such as apples, pears, and persimmons, accompanied by warm teas. Jujube tea or ginger tea, in particular, can warm the body and calm the mind.

Stay Connected with Others

Isolation tends to deepen the gloom. Sharing a cup of tea with a neighbor or friend, joining a small gathering, or participating in a hobby can lift the spirit and help you feel more connected.

The TKM Perspective

In Traditional Korean Medicine, autumn is the season when the energy of the lungs (肺) is strongest. The lungs not only govern breathing but are also closely linked to emotions. When lung energy weakens, respiratory issues and mood-related symptoms such as depression and fatigue become more common.

For this reason, TKM often recommends warming teas, restorative herbal tonics, or acupuncture to strengthen Qi circulation, calm the mind, and restore emotional balance.

If feelings of sadness and fatigue persist despite lifestyle adjustments, herbal prescriptions may provide further support. Formulas such as Bojung-Ikgi-tang or Sipjeondaebo-tang can replenish depleted energy, while Suanzaoren-tang or Kami-Gwibi-tang may ease insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness. A customized herbal approach, tailored to one’s constitution, helps the body and mind regain balance and makes it easier to overcome seasonal depression.

Conclusion

Through Vancouver’s long and cloudy autumn and winter, resilience comes from small, mindful practices: catching the sunlight when it appears, moving the body daily, eating warm and nourishing foods, and staying socially connected. These simple habits serve as anchors for emotional stability, helping you keep your spirit light despite the weather.

This autumn, may you care for yourself well, rise above the gray skies, and enjoy the season with a brighter and lighter heart.
