Vancouver’s Dry Air: Protecting the Lungs and Respiratory System

Vancouver is often referred to as the “City of Rain,” but those who live here are also aware that dryness is a common challenge. In winter, indoor heating drastically lowers humidity, while in summer, strong sunlight and wind can easily dry out the skin and respiratory passages. Such conditions place extra strain on the lungs and airways—especially for older adults with more fragile mucous membranes, or those already managing chronic respiratory issues.

The bronchial passages are the first point of contact with outside air. When they become dry, the mucous membranes weaken, reducing the body’s defense against dust, bacteria, and viruses. As a result, symptoms such as throat irritation, frequent coughing, sticky phlegm, or even nosebleeds may appear. While Vancouver’s environment is often praised for its freshness, dryness can quietly disrupt the body’s balance.

Everyday Measures to Protect the Airways

The first step is maintaining proper indoor humidity. Using a humidifier, placing damp towels, or leaving bowls of water indoors can help keep humidity between 40–60%. Staying hydrated is also essential—sip warm water throughout the day to keep mucous membranes moist. Outdoors, wearing a mask can shield the airways from cold wind and dust.

Food also plays a key role. Traditional remedies such as pear, balloon flower root, radish, honey, and ginkgo nuts are known to moisten the lungs and ease phlegm. A simple steamed pear with honey, known as baesuk, has long been enjoyed as both a soothing seasonal treat and a natural remedy during dry months.

The TKM Perspective: Treating “Dryness” (Jo, 燥)

In Traditional Korean Medicine, dryness (jo, 燥) is considered a major factor that damages the lungs, especially during autumn and winter. When the lungs dry out, symptoms such as persistent cough, sore throat, and even hoarseness often follow. Treatment focuses on moistening the lungs (潤肺, Yun-Pye) and clearing internal heat (淸熱, Cheong-Yeol).

Representative herbal formulas include:

  • Mai Men Dong Tang (麥門冬湯) – effective for persistent dry cough, throat irritation, and swelling.

  • Sha Shen Mai Men Dong Tang (沙蔘麥門冬湯) – replenishes fluids and nourishes Yin in cases of dryness and deficiency.

  • Cheong Sang Bo Ha Tang (淸上補下湯) – helps those with low vitality who also suffer from frequent coughing.

Unlike simple cough suppressants, these formulas aim to restore lung function and prevent recurrence by addressing the root cause—damage from dryness.

Healing Foods and Teas

Medicinal foods (yakseon) also play an important role. Balloon flower tea and schisandra tea soothe the throat and airways, while ginkgo nuts, walnuts, and black sesame seeds help nourish mucous membranes. Easily incorporated into daily life, these foods are recommended for both prevention and support.

Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Acupuncture at points associated with the lungs—such as Chize, Kongzui, and Lieque—can relieve coughs and ease breathing. Stimulating points like Zusanli or Zhongwan help boost energy and immunity. Moxibustion at Feishu (Lung Shu) and Shenshu (Kidney Shu) warms the lungs and enhances overall resistance.

Dry air affects far more than the skin—it can impact the lungs, airways, and general health. In Vancouver’s climate, protecting respiratory health requires both small lifestyle practices and holistic approaches that moisten and strengthen the lungs. 밴쿠버의 건조한 공기, 폐와 호흡기를 지키는 지혜

벤쿠버는 ‘비의 도시’라는 별명처럼 비가 잦은 지역으로 알려져 있습니다. 하지만 실제로 이곳에 살아보면 의외로 건조함을 자주 느끼게 됩니다. 겨울철에는 난방으로 인해 실내 습도가 크게 낮아지고, 여름철에는 강한 햇빛과 바람으로 인해 피부와 호흡기가 쉽게 마릅니다. 이러한 건조한 환경은 우리의 기관지와 폐 건강에 큰 부담을 주게 됩니다. 특히 나이가 들면서 점막이 약해진 분들이나, 만성 호흡기 질환을 가지고 있는 분들에게는 더욱 민감한 문제가 됩니다.

기관지는 외부 공기와 가장 먼저 접촉하는 통로입니다. 이곳이 건조해지면 점막이 약해지고 미세먼지나 세균, 바이러스에 대한 방어력이 떨어집니다. 그래서 목이 간질거리거나 기침이 잦아지고, 가래가 끈적하게 달라붙으며, 때로는 코피가 쉽게 나는 경우도 생깁니다. 밴쿠버의 생활환경이 쾌적하다고는 하지만, 이처럼 건조한 날씨는 우리 몸의 균형을 흔드는 요인이 될 수 있습니다.

생활 속에서 가장 먼저 실천할 수 있는 방법은 실내 습도 관리입니다. 가습기를 활용하거나 젖은 수건, 물그릇을 두어 습도를 40~60%로 유지하는 것이 좋습니다. 또한 하루에 8잔 이상의 미지근한 물을 조금씩 자주 마셔 점막을 촉촉하게 유지해야 합니다. 외출 시에는 마스크를 착용해 찬바람과 먼지가 직접 기관지에 닿는 것을 막는 것도 도움이 됩니다. 음식 또한 기관지 건강을 지키는 데 중요한 역할을 합니다. 배, 도라지, 무, 꿀, 은행 같은 식재료는 폐와 기관지를 촉촉하게 하고 가래를 삭이는 효과가 있어 예로부터 애용되었습니다. 간단히 배를 꿀에 넣어 찌는 ‘배숙’은 건조한 계절에 가족과 함께 나눌 수 있는 훌륭한 보약 간식이 됩니다.

한의학에서는 건조한 기운을 ‘조(燥)’라고 부릅니다. 조기는 폐를 상하게 하는 대표적인 원인으로, 가을철과 겨울철에 특히 문제가 되곤 합니다. 폐가 건조해지면 기침이 오래가고 목이 아프며, 음성까지 쉬게 됩니다. 이를 해결하기 위해 한방에서는 ‘윤폐(潤肺, 폐를 촉촉하게 함)’와 ‘청열(淸熱, 열을 내려줌)’을 중심으로 치료를 진행합니다.

대표적인 한약으로는 **맥문동탕(麥門冬湯)**이 있습니다. 이는 마른 기침이 오래가고 목이 붓거나 간질거릴 때 효과적입니다. 또 **사삼맥문동탕(沙蔘麥門冬湯)**은 음액이 부족하고 진액이 마른 증상을 보완해 주며, **청상보하탕(淸上補下湯)**은 기력이 약하면서도 기침이 잦은 분들께 도움을 줍니다. 이런 처방들은 단순히 기침만을 억제하는 것이 아니라, 근본적으로 건조한 기운으로 손상된 폐의 기능을 회복시켜 재발을 줄이는 데 목적이 있습니다.

약선(藥膳) 또한 중요한 역할을 합니다. 도라지차, 오미자차는 목을 보호하고 기관지를 부드럽게 하며, 은행이나 호두, 검은깨는 점막을 윤택하게 해줍니다. 이러한 음식들은 생활 속에서 쉽게 접할 수 있어 예방 차원에서도 권장할 만합니다.

침·뜸 치료도 기관지 건강 관리에 도움이 됩니다. 폐와 관련된 혈자리인 척택, 공최, 열결 등에 침을 놓으면 기침이나 호흡 곤란이 완화되고, 족삼리나 중완에 자극을 주면 기력이 보강되며 면역력이 높아집니다. 뜸은 폐수와 신수에 주로 뜨는데, 이는 폐기를 따뜻하게 하고 전신의 저항력을 높여주는 효과가 있습니다.

결국 건조한 기후는 단순히 피부가 건조해지는 문제를 넘어서, 호흡기와 전신 건강에까지 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 밴쿠버와 같은 환경에서 건강을 지키려면 생활 속의 작은 실천과 더불어, 한방적인 접근을 통해 폐를 윤택하게 하고 기운을 북돋는 것이 필요합니다. 몸의 균형을 잘 지켜 나간다면, 비가 오락가락하는 밴쿠버의 기후 속에서도 건강한 호흡과 맑은 기운을 유지할 수 있을 것입니다.
