Wisdom to beat the summer heat and humidity
The midsummer heat has begun in earnest. Summer is a time when the discomfort index rises rapidly due to high temperatures and high humidity. In particular, summer in Korea is characterized by 'hot and humid weather'. It is also a season in which it is easy to get tired physically and mentally. In fact, many people easily get tired in the summer heat, have poor digestion, or have trouble sleeping.

So how can we spend the hot summer healthily and wisely? In Oriental medicine, summer health management is explained as 'protecting the heart energy and controlling damp heat.' Let's find out how to spend the hot summer healthily through this.

It is important to keep your spirits up

In Oriental medicine, summer is considered to correspond to the energy of fire among the four seasons , and is explained as being connected to the **heart** in the human body. The summer heat weakens the heart, which can easily lead to symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, insomnia, palpitations, and irritability .

On hot summer days, we sweat a lot, but excessive sweating can easily deplete body fluids and weaken the energy of the heart. Therefore, in summer, it is important to nourish the energy of the heart and stabilize the mind more than anything else.

For this, first of all, it is essential to replenish water . In particular, it is better to drink lukewarm water or herbal teas such as barley tea or corn silk tea rather than very cold water , as they are easier on the stomach. On days when you sweat a lot, adding a pinch of sea salt to water and drinking it will also help maintain electrolyte balance.

Also, because of the summer heat, it is easy to become irritable and suffer from insomnia. In such cases, it is also helpful to boil lotus seeds, jujube, and sanjo- in and drink them as tea, which help calm the mind and body. Slowing down and taking your time more than usual is also a secret to staying healthy in the summer.

Wisdom of diet to overcome damp heat

Another problem in the summer is damp heat . When the temperature is high and the humidity is high, moisture and heat can easily accumulate in the body. If left untreated, it can cause indigestion, diarrhea, and a feeling of heaviness and lethargy. In particular, people with weak stomachs are more likely to experience loss of appetite in the summer.

In order to properly manage damp heat, you should be careful about the foods you eat on a regular basis. Cold foods, oily foods, and sweet foods may temporarily feel cool and good, but they actually make your insides colder and cause moisture to build up, so you should be careful.

Instead, it is better to frequently consume foods and teas such as cucumber, lotus root, red bean, yeoju, barley tea, and yulmu tea . These foods are especially recommended in the summer because they have the effect of expelling moisture from the body and cooling down the body. In addition, watermelon , a representative summer fruit , is good for relieving thirst, and melons and plums also help the digestive function and help overcome the loss of appetite in the summer.

In oriental medicine, yulmu red bean tea is recommended as a representative tea that cools down the summer heat and eliminates damp heat . Yulmu removes dampness, and red beans help with diuresis, which is excellent for expelling unnecessary water and heat from the body. Also, lotus seed jujube tea is effective for those who have trouble sleeping at night. Lotus seed stabilizes the energy of the heart and has a calming effect, so it is also good for insomnia caused by the heat.

Lifestyle habits to beat the heat

In order to spend the hot summer healthily, in addition to food and tea, you need to take care of your daily life. When using the air conditioner, it is important not to make the temperature difference between the indoor and outdoor too large . It is best to set the air conditioner temperature to about 5 to 7 degrees lower than the outside temperature and use a fan or circulator to induce air circulation.

Also, soaking your feet in lukewarm water before going to bed is a good way to cool down from the day's fatigue and heat. Soaking your feet in water that is slightly warmer than your body temperature for 10 to 15 minutes will improve the quality of your sleep.

In addition, if you are easily exhausted due to the summer heat, it is a wise choice to seek help from a Korean medicine clinic . Symptoms such as decreased physical strength, chronic fatigue, indigestion, and insomnia in the summer can be improved with acupuncture and herbal medicine prescriptions that are suitable for your constitution . In particular, recommended tonics for the summer include Gongjindan, Gyeongokgo, and Simhyanghwan , which help restore physical strength and enhance immunity.

Summer is the season to prepare for new health.

The hot weather is a season of discomfort, but on the other hand, summer is also a season to get rid of waste and moisture in the body and prepare for fall and winter. If you spend the summer well, you can greet the next season in good health.

This summer, we hope you can overcome the heat and humidity with the wisdom of oriental medicine and find new vitality.
