Staying Healthy During the Seasonal Shift from Summer to Autumn

As the blazing heat of midsummer begins to fade, cool breezes arrive in the mornings and evenings. This transitional period—the shift from summer to autumn—is what we call a seasonal change. During this time, daily temperature differences may exceed 15°C, and the dry winds can easily throw our bodies out of balance. For those with low energy or weakened immunity, respiratory illnesses and flare-ups of chronic conditions are particularly common, requiring extra care.

1. Large Temperature Fluctuations and Respiratory Illness

While the daytime may still feel like midsummer, mornings and evenings bring much cooler air, often triggering colds, bronchitis, or rhinitis. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this is described as “excess dryness (燥氣)”, where autumn’s dry energy harms the lungs, causing coughs, dry throat, and even itchy skin. To prevent this, it is important to stay hydrated with warm teas, reduce excessive air conditioner use, and wear light outer clothing to help maintain a stable body temperature. Seniors with chronic respiratory issues must be especially cautious.

2. Lowered Immunity and Worsening Chronic Conditions

After months of sweating heavily and consuming cold foods and drinks, the digestive system may already be weakened. When cooler winds arrive, immunity can quickly decline, often worsening conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, while also increasing fatigue. Regular meals with sufficient protein, along with light aerobic exercise, help replenish Qi and Blood. In TKM, herbal tonics that strengthen the lungs (Bu-Fei, 補肺) and boost Qi (Bu-Qi, 補氣) are often prescribed to support immunity during seasonal transitions.

3. Sleep Rhythm Disturbances

Some people continue to struggle with poor sleep patterns left over from hot summer nights, while others wake frequently in the early morning due to temperature changes. Poor sleep quality can lead to low mood, poor concentration, and weakened immunity. Autumn is considered the time when Yang energy subsides and Yin energy grows, so it is best to adopt the rhythm of early to bed and early to rise. Warm foot baths or light stretching before bedtime can also improve sleep quality.

4. Skin and Allergy Management

Dry autumn winds can roughen the skin and cause itching. For those with atopic dermatitis or allergies, symptoms often worsen. Using ample moisturizers and washing off sweat promptly helps reduce irritation. In TKM, the lungs and skin are closely connected. Consuming foods that moisten the lungs, such as ginkgo, pear, balloon flower root, and lily bulb, is highly recommended.

5. Mental Balance and Adapting to the Season

Autumn is a season of harvest and gradual retreat in nature. Our bodies and minds should also follow this rhythm of moderation and conservation. Instead of overexertion or excessive outdoor activity, a more beneficial approach is to maintain a regular lifestyle, cultivate calmness through meditation, and enjoy gentle activities such as walking.

환절기, 여름에서 가을로 넘어가는 길목에서 지켜야 할 건강법

한여름의 뜨거운 햇볕이 서서히 누그러지고 아침·저녁으로는 선선한 바람이 부는 계절, 바로 여름에서 가을로 넘어가는 환절기입니다. 이 시기는 하루의 기온차가 15도 이상 크게 벌어지기도 하고, 건조한 바람이 불면서 우리 몸이 쉽게 균형을 잃을 수 있습니다. 특히 기력이 떨어지거나 면역력이 약한 분들에게는 각종 호흡기 질환이나 만성 질환의 악화가 잦아 주의가 필요합니다.

1. 큰 일교차와 호흡기 질환

낮에는 한여름처럼 덥다가도 아침·저녁으로는 기온이 크게 내려가면서 감기, 기관지염, 비염 같은 호흡기 질환이 흔히 발생합니다. 한의학에서는 이를 **“조기(燥氣)가 성하다”**고 표현하는데, 가을의 건조한 기운이 폐를 상하게 하여 기침, 목의 건조감, 피부 가려움 등을 유발합니다. 따라서 따뜻한 차와 수분 섭취로 체내의 윤기를 보충하고, 지나친 냉방기 사용을 줄이는 것이 도움이 됩니다. 특히 만성 기관지 질환이 있는 노인층은 얇은 겉옷을 챙겨 체온을 일정하게 유지하는 것이 중요합니다.

2. 면역력 저하와 만성질환 악화

여름 내내 땀을 많이 흘리고, 냉음식과 찬 음료를 자주 섭취한 탓에 소화기능이 약해진 상태에서 곧바로 선선한 바람을 맞게 되면 면역력이 떨어지기 쉽습니다. 이로 인해 당뇨, 고혈압, 심혈관 질환이 악화되거나 피로가 깊어지는 경우가 많습니다. 평소 규칙적인 식사와 충분한 단백질 섭취, 가벼운 유산소 운동으로 기혈을 보충하는 것이 필요합니다. 또한 한의학에서는 기운을 돋우고 면역력을 강화하는 보약, 예컨대 보폐(補肺)·보기(補氣)하는 약재들을 활용하여 계절의 전환기에 생기는 허약함을 보완하기도 합니다.

3. 수면 리듬의 변화

여름철의 더위 때문에 밤잠을 설치던 습관이 남아 있거나, 환절기의 일교차로 새벽녘에 깨는 경우가 많습니다. 수면의 질이 떨어지면 우울감, 집중력 저하, 면역 약화로 이어집니다. 가을철은 ‘양기가 수렴하고 음기가 자라나는 시기’이므로, 일찍 자고 일찍 일어나는 생활습관이 몸의 리듬과 맞습니다. 자기 전에는 따뜻한 족욕이나 스트레칭으로 몸을 풀어주면 숙면에 도움이 됩니다.

4. 피부와 알레르기 관리

가을의 건조한 바람은 피부를 쉽게 거칠게 하고 가려움을 유발합니다. 특히 아토피나 알레르기 체질을 가진 분들은 증상이 심해지기 쉽습니다. 보습제를 충분히 사용하고, 땀을 흘린 뒤에는 바로 씻어내어 피부 자극을 줄이는 것이 좋습니다. 한방에서는 폐와 피부가 서로 연결되어 있다고 보기에, 폐를 촉촉하게 하는 은행, 배, 도라지, 백합 같은 식품을 섭취하는 것을 권장합니다.

5. 마음가짐과 계절의 순응

가을은 한 해를 정리하는 수확의 계절이자, 만물이 서서히 움츠러드는 시기입니다. 따라서 우리의 몸과 마음도 절제와 수렴의 리듬을 따라야 합니다. 지나친 야외활동이나 과로보다는, 규칙적인 생활과 마음을 차분히 가라앉히는 명상, 산책 같은 활동이 건강 유지에 이롭습니다.
